Semi-Truck Driver Seriously Injured During Rear-End Crash in Seminole County
Heavy congestion and closed lanes caused several delays for local drivers during their morning commute yesterday after a big rig crashed into the back of a dump truck on Interstate 4 near State Road 46 in Seminole County.
Preliminary incident reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was close to 9:30 a.m. on August 3, 2022, when a 37-year-old male driver from Deltona was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer heading in the westbound direction of I-4 by mile marker 99 near Lake Mary. According to witness statements, the semi-truck was allegedly driving “recklessly” and traveling “too fast” for the flow of traffic when it approached a stopped dump truck that was waiting for other vehicles on the roadway to pass. The semi-truck rear-ended the dump truck with such force that the driver of the big rig became stuck in the cab of his vehicle.
Local law enforcement agencies in Seminole County and authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the accident and were able to safely extricate the entrapped 37-year-old semi-truck driver. He was transported in serious, but stable condition to Central Florida Regional Hospital for additional medical treatment.
The 39-year-old driver of the dump truck was unharmed during the collision, however, he was taken into custody by the Lake Mary Police Department for an unrelated, outstanding warrant for tampering with evidence.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident. No formal charges have been filed against the driver of the semi-truck, but if investigators are able to prove the witness allegations, that situation could certainly change.
