Report Shows Florida Roadways Growing More Dangerous
A report was recently issued by the Florida Department of Transportation that confirmed something the legal community already knew: Florida roadways have become much more crowded and dangerous. The DoT report, titled, “Traffic Crash Facts Annual Report 2012” was published in October 2013. In generating the report, authors parsed a wide range of accident data dating back to 1991.
The report begins by providing a broad outline of state accident statistics from 2010, 2011 and 2012, which indicate that car accidents are up sharply across Florida. For example, in 2010, there were 235.461 auto accidents in our state for an average of 645 accidents per day. These accidents resulted in 2,444 fatalities and 195,104 people being injured seriously enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room.
In 2012, there were 281,340 auto accidents on Florida roadways, an alarming 23.4% increase in just two years and an average of 771 accidents per day. Despite the sharp rise in accidents, the number of people killed in these accidents dropped slightly to 2,430 and the number of people injured rose slightly to 198,032.
Here in Orange County, we have seen similar increases in total number of auto accidents and a corresponding rise in people injured and killed in these accidents. In 2010, there were 19,480 auto accidents for an average of 53 accidents per day. At least 132 Floridians died in Orange County car accidents that year and 15,012 people were injured. By 2012, the total number of accidents had risen more than 12 percent to 21,460, which killed 150 people and injured 14,440 more. While the overall number of people injured was down slightly in 2012, an average of nearly 40 people injured each day in Orange County auto accidents is a frightening number, indeed.
