Rear-End Crash in Orange County Kills Winter Park Driver
An investigation is currently ongoing into an incident that happened within Orange County towards the end of November and resulted in the death of a man from Winter Park. The reports from the Florida Highway Patrol members working in Orange County indicated that the incident was reported shortly before noon on Friday, November 27th.
It was close to 11:30 a.m. when a 53-year-old behind the wheel of an SUV was making their way down Interstate 4, closing in on the exit that takes drivers off of the busy I-4 and onto the slightly less congested Fairbanks Avenue. The reports suggested that the driver of the SUV was not attempting to exit onto Fairbanks Avenue, however it appears that the vehicle directly in front of the SUV was in fact making this change. This second car, carrying two 52-year-old individuals from Ohio, was being slowed by the car’s driver in preparation to exit I-4 when they were struck by the SUV.
Based on the force of the crash, the indication is that the driver of the SUV failed completely to slow their vehicle in the moments before the crash. As a result of the rear-end collision, the 53-year-old driver, believed to not be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was partially thrown from the vehicle as it began to overturn. These situations are extremely dangerous and often fatal as the rolling car can pin the ejected bodies, inflicting far more severe damage upon them than would have been suffered if the person had managed to remain within the cab of the car, truck, or SUV.
When paramedics and EMTs reached the scene, they were able to offer some emergency treatment to the 53-year-old in the SUV. This person was then rushed from the scene to Orlando Health, where they were later pronounced dead as a result of their injuries.
Both of the 52-year-olds within the other vehicle were injured as well, but the reports stated that their injuries were minor. They were both able to be treated at the scene of the crash.
As stated above, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
