Orlando Resident Killed in Wrong-Way Collision with Pickup Truck
On July 27th, 2020, an Orlando man suffered fatal injuries after he was involved in a deadly wrong-way auto accident. According to preliminary crash reports from the Florida Highway Patrol working within Orange County, troopers witnessed this man driving his vehicle at an increased speed in the wrong direction down State Road 408 when he collided head-on with an oncoming pickup truck.
It was shortly before 9 p.m. this past Monday evening when a Nissan Maxima being driven by a 61-year-old Orlando resident was traveling in the wrong direction of the westbound lanes of S.R. 408 close to John Young Parkway. One Florida Highway Patrol officer ended up being first-hand witness to the crash, as he was already in the area looking into a different accident that had taken place near Old Winter Garden Road. As soon as the Maxima whizzed by him, he returned to his cruiser to contact other local authorities for assistance with the speeding driver. It was almost immediately after the trooper radioed for help that the Nissan crashed head-on into a pickup truck that was traveling in the correct direction of the highway.
Emergency response teams arrived onsite to discover that both drivers had sustained serious injuries in the crash. The 61-year-old was rushed to Orlando Health for immediate medical assistance, however, he was unable to survive and passed away soon after arrival. The 30-year-old driver of the pickup truck was also transported to a local hospital where remains in serious condition.
Investigators are still processing the evidence retrieved from the scene in order to determine a potential timeline of events leading up to this fatal wrong-way car crash. The westbound lanes of John Young Parkway were closed during this time.
Oftentimes accidents such as these are due to a variety of reasons including, but certainly not limited to:
- The driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- The driver was texting while driving.
- A medical emergency occurred which incapacitated the driver.
- A vehicle malfunction like a stuck accelerator, for example.
