Orlando Police Officer Involved in Two-Car Crash
A police officer working for the Orlando Police Department was involved in an auto accident that happened close to Universal Studios within the City of Orlando only a short while after noon on Tuesday, August 31st. According to the official reports that were issued by some of the responding law enforcement parties after the incident, the crash involved the Orlando Police Department officer and one other individual. Shortly before the collision took place, the officer involved heard reports of another emergency come over their radio. This officer then activated their lights and proceeded to race down the road in an attempt to reach the scene of the crash as quickly as possible.
The officer was driving their police cruiser down Kirkman Road when they neared the intersection of Kirkman and Major Boulevard. Both of these roads are multi-lane roadways that see a high volume of traffic throughout the day. It is not clear if the officer was aware of this fact, but witnesses to the scene did indicate that the squad car entered the scene with its lights and siren activated.
At the same time as the police officer was making their way to the intersection, a blue car was being driven down the northern lanes of Major Boulevard. The driver of the blue car did have a green light at the time they reached the intersection, however any traffic signals are adjusted depending on the presence of emergency vehicles such as police cars when their lights are activated. The driver of the blue vehicle either failed to notice the squad car or believed that they could make it safely through the intersection regardless of the presence of the other vehicle.
Pictures taken from a Sky 6 helicopter show the squad car and the blue vehicle almost nose-to-nose, both suffering from damage to their front ends. Neither of the vehicles appear to be completely mangled, and it is also known that neither the police officer nor the civilian suffered from serious injuries as a result of the crash. As is normally the case in such situations, the officer was taken from the scene to the Florida South Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the blue car was treated at the scene of the crash for their injuries. It is not known if any charges are pending.
