Orlando Police Department Officer Involved in Violent Collision
An officer with the Orlando Police Department is one of several individuals who was involved in an auto accident that took place during the afternoon of Monday, October 26th, say reports from this same agency. What we know at the time of this writing is that it was sometime after 4:00 when police officers received an emergency dispatch that caused certain officers, including the one involved in the crash, to speed towards an unspecified location. The officer in question was inside of a marked squad vehicle and had reportedly activated both their lights and siren.
The officer was piloting their cruiser down the eastern lanes of East Colonial Drive when they neared the intersection of this road and Hughey Avenue. It was as they were making their way through this intersection when another vehicle struck them.
This second vehicle is believed to have come from the busy Interstate 4 when they reached the intersection and struck the officer’s car. At the time of the collision, both the police officer and the civilian were driving at an advanced rate of speed, and the damage done to the vehicles was reportedly severe. Aerial pictures from the scene show numerous squad cars in the intersection, one of them with a badly mangled front end. The civilian vehicle can be seen loaded onto the back of a tow truck.
Both drivers involved in the accident did sustain injuries as a result of the collision, however it is believed that neither of them are being treated for anything life-threatening. Shortly after the collision, when the initial reports were issued, it was believed that the civilian was transported from the scene to a nearby hospital and was doing well. The reports also stated that the officer involved in the car crash was recovering from the incident.
Despite their expected recovery, it is also the case that accidents such as the one that took place between the squad car and the civilian vehicle on Monday often leave the individuals involved with lingering and unexpected injuries. At this point, it is too early to know whether or not either of the two involved are expected to make a full recovery, but it is entirely possible that the force of the crash will cause them each to suffer from a variety of after-effects for an unknown period of time.
