One Fatality and Multiple Injuries in Colonial Drive Collision
A collision between multiple vehicles within Orange County has resulted in the injury of numerous individuals as well as the death of one person. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol working within the area suggest that the auto accident happened after several cars collided along East Colonial Drive on Tuesday, March 10th.
Additional information supplied in the reports places the beginning of the incident at sometime during the afternoon. A more precise description of the time when the incident took place was not forthcoming, but it is absolutely possible that the crash happened during the afternoon rush hour, a time when roadways throughout Central Florida are clogged with a high volume of cars ferrying people from work to home.
Close to this area of East Colonial Drive is an airboat touring company, and it appears as though the driver of a Toyota was attempting to turn off of the roadway and into the driveway for the attraction. It appears as though the Toyota was traveling in the eastern lanes of Colonial Drive, and in order to access the airboat company’s driveway they needed to cross over the western lanes of Colonial Drive. It is not clear exactly why the driver of the Toyota felt that the time at which they began the turn was a safe time, but we do know that a 2004 Jeep was headed westbound at the exact same moment and in the exact same place.
Before the Toyota could clear the roadway, the Jeep slammed into the side of the Toyota. It is not known if the driver of the Jeep was able to slow their vehicle down at all, but the damage to both the vehicles and the passengers within suggests that the Jeep was still traveling at an advanced rate of speed when the collision took place.
Emergency response crews rushed to the area and immediately began tending to those who were most injured as a result of the crash. It is not known how many people total were involved, but the reports stated that four individuals who were traveling inside of the Toyota were rushed from the area to a nearby hospital. At least one person involved in the crash was also declared dead, but the reports did not say whether or not this person was inside of the Jeep or the Toyota. The reports also failed to explicitly mention the condition of anyone in the Jeep.
An investigation into the crash remains underway.
