One Dead, Several Injured After Multi-Vehicle Crash in Charlotte County
Authorities in Southwest Florida are currently working to determine the cause of a multi-vehicle collision which claimed the life of one individual and severely injured several others early yesterday morning along U.S. 41 in Charlotte County.
Preliminary auto accident reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol in Charlotte County, it was approximately 7:00 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2023, when a pickup truck pulling a utility trailer was travelling in the southbound direction of U.S. 41. As the truck approached the vicinity of Zemel Road, something caused the driver, a 28-year-old Zephyrhills man, to lose control of his vehicle and cross over the highway’s median divider. The pickup truck crashed head-on into an SUV that was being driven by a 32-year-old man from Cape Coral.
The impact from the first collision pushed the sport utility vehicle into the northbound oncoming traffic of U.S. 41 where it crashed into a sedan that was carrying a 48-year-old woman from Miami and her 64-year-old female passenger from Cape Coral before coming to a complete stop.
Officers with the Florida Highway Patrol and Charlotte County emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the three-car crash shortly after the collision occurred. Upon their arrival, they sadly determined that the 64-year-old passenger in the sedan had sustained severe injuries. She was declared dead at the scene. The driver of that vehicle received minor injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 32-year-old Cape Coral resident, suffered serious injuries during the accident and was transported to a nearby hospital. His current condition is unknown at this time.
The three occupants of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries during the deadly incident.
The fatal auto accident is under investigation by members of the Florida Highway Patrol.
