One Dead, One Injured in Two-Car Crash in Marion County
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Marion County were among the first responders to an incident that took place on Tuesday, January 21st, and resulted in the death of a 62-year-old individual. Reports from the FHP stated that the car accident is believed to have taken place at or around 9:00 at night, as an individual inside of a 2004 Toyota SUV was driving down the northern lanes of U.S. 27. It is believed that the 62-year-old was alone inside of their vehicle. In front of the Toyota was another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
What exactly happened to cause the incident is not entirely clear. What we know is that the driver of the 2004 Toyota approached the rear of the vehicle ahead of them at an advanced rate of speed. The driver of the Toyota either did not know there was another vehicle ahead of them or was otherwise distracted from the roadway as they approached, a condition which resulted in them striking the rear of the front car with considerable force.
The impact caused both of the vehicles to begin to spin out of control. The driver of the front car managed to retain control somewhat over their vehicle, coming to a stop within the road still facing the direction they were initially driving. The driver of the Toyota was not as fortunate, and their car spun out the road and left the asphalt, eventually coming to a stop facing the wrong direction in the grass median separating the northern and southern lanes of U.S. 27.
Emergency response crews rushed to the area following the incident and began to treat both of the drivers involved. Again, it is not believed that either of the vehicles contained any passengers other than the persons behind the wheel. The emergency medical response crews assessed that both of the drivers had suffered injuries as a result of the crash, and they were each transported from the area to Ocala Regional Hospital. The injuries sustained by the driver of the Toyota were extremely severe, and they were pronounced dead sometime after arriving at the hospital.
