One Dead, One Injured After Marion County Rollover Accident
During the first week of May, two teenagers were traveling within a vehicle along U.S. 301 when they were involved in a car accident. We know from reports issued by the Florida Highway Patrol that it was sometime during the night, close to 10:30, when the two were inside of a pickup truck and traveling down the highway at a speed above the posted limit. It is currently unclear just how the Florida Highway Patrol determined the exact speed of the car, only that it exceeded that allowed by the law.
It is not known where the two were coming from, but we do know that it was as they reached the intersection of U.S. 301 and 144th Place Road within the city of Summerfield in Marion County when they reached a curve located within the roadway. It is believed that this curve was fully manageable for individuals traveling at the appropriate speed limit, but this was not the case four the two teens in this report. It is not known if any factors other than speed contributed to the incident, but as they reached the curve, the driver failed to navigate the turn appropriately and the truck subsequently departed from the roadway.
The driver of the pickup realized what had happened and made an effort to return the vehicle to the road itself, but in the process they accidentally overcorrected and the truck began to flip. The report stated that the car rolled numerous times before coming to a stop. Neither of the two traveling within the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident and both were thrown from the cab of the truck as a result.
Injuries that occur from being thrown from a moving vehicle are often extremely severe, as was the case in this crash. When the paramedics and EMTs reached the area of the crash, there was nothing they could do for the driver of the truck and this individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger also sustained severe injuries, although they were able to be transported from the scene to Ocala Regional Medical Center where they received attention from the doctors and nurses on staff there.
The fatal crash remains under investigation.
