One Dead, Five Injured in Multi-Car Crash in Sumter County
A massive collision that took place along the Florida Turnpike in Sumter County resulted in numerous injuries as well as at least one fatality on the morning of Friday, December 27th. This end-of-the-month crash occurred close to the mile marker 303, well within Sumter County, and resulted from a rear-end collision.
Shortly before the accident, a Chevrolet Equinox was traveling down one of the Florida Turnpike’s lanes when it reached a portion of the busy highway that was plugged up with traffic. For reasons that are not clear, the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox was either not paying attention to the roadway or there were otherwise conditions that prevented them from seeing what was happening before their car. Due to this, the driver failed to slow their vehicle down as they approached the stopped line of traffic. This resulted in them colliding with the rear of a Nissan Sentra.
The force of the collision with the Equinox caused the Sentra to shoot forward and crash heavily into a Jeep Compass as well as a Honda Accord. The Equinox, for its part, spun out of control and crashed into the guardrail. From the guardrail, the Equinox was then propelled back into the roadway where it collided with a Mitsubishi Mirage.
At least six people were involved in the crash. One of them, a 52-year-old who was a passenger inside of the Nissan Sentra, was badly injured as a result of the rear-end crash. When medical teams reached the area, they rushed this individual to a nearby hospital where the facility’s medical staff attempted unsuccessfully to save their life. The 52-year-old was declared dead sometime after arriving at the hospital.
Five of the others who were involved in the crash reportedly suffered from only minor injuries. It is not clear if they were transported from the area to a hospital or if their injuries were able to be treated at the scene of the accident.
Another person who was inside of one of the cars was reportedly not injured at all as a result of the crash.
The incident remained under investigation for an unknown period of time while the Florida Highway Patrol attempted to uncover just what caused the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox to fail to slow down.
