Numerous Cars Collide with Stray Drive Shaft in Orange County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 29, 2019

Numerous drivers passing along a certain stretch of Interstate 4 in Orange County received an unpleasant shock on Thursday, December 19th, after encountering an unexpected object lying within the road. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol’s spokesperson, Lt. Kim Montes, indicated that the incident took place in the western lanes of I-4, near the intersection with Sand Lake Road.

It is not clear when the first reports of a large object lying within the road began to emerge, but we do know that throughout the morning of Thursday at least six different cars pulled over as a result of the presence of a large piece of metal lying within the lanes of the highway. It is believed that at least a few of the cars that pulled over suffered damage as a result of striking the object, but the extent of the damage was not immediately included in the report. It is not known if any individuals were injured as a result of the impacts with the foreign object.

When officers arrived, they found that the object in question appeared to be a drive shaft. The large piece of metal is believed to have fallen off of a large semi-truck that was traveling through the area and that was also pulled off to the side of the road. It is not clear if the semi pulled over because the driver of the vehicle was aware that a piece of equipment had fallen from the truck or if they had pulled off to the side due to some other, unknown reasons.

As indicated above, much of the details relating to this particular incident remain unknown. An investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol remains underway as the authorities attempt to discover whether or not the accident was the result of negligence or simply a haphazard circumstance that possesses no distinct center point around which the blame can cohere.

It is hoped that more details around the event will become available as the investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol continues. It is not immediately known whether or not the incident was in any way connected to the ongoing I-4 Ultimate Project.
