Motorcyclist Killed During U-Turn Crash in Hillsborough County
A 62-year-old man from Tampa was taken into custody over the weekend for his alleged connection to a drunk driver crash that killed a motorcyclist on Hillsborough Avenue last Sunday evening.
According to several reports from local media outlets, it was approximately 8:43 p.m. on June 11, 2023, when 62-year-old Tampa resident Ulises J. Camargo Vergara was driving a van toward the intersection of Hillsborough Avenue and Sawyer Road. As he approached the green light, he entered the left-turn lane at the intersection and performed a U-turn underneath the traffic signal. This maneuver positioned the van within the direct path of an oncoming motorcyclist driving from the westbound direction of Hillsborough Avenue. Neither driver was able to avoid a collision and the two vehicles were involved in a T-bone crash.
Hillsborough County emergency responders and the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the two-vehicle accident and transported the severely injured motorcyclist to a nearby hospital. The 33-year-old man from Hudson, whose name has not been released to the public, did not survive his injuries and passed away a short time later.
Although the 62-year-old driver of the van Ulises J. Camargo Vergara, was not injured during the fatal auto accident, he was arrested after providing a 0.153 BAC during field sobriety testing from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol. The drunk driving suspect was arrested for DUI manslaughter and taken to Falkenburg Road Jail in Tampa.
