Miami-Dade Driver Crashes Through Fence and Private Pool After Medical Emergency
Security cameras placed around a private residence within Miami-Dade County captured the terrifying moment when an SUV careened through a privacy fence and over a private pool in a violent crash believed to have been caused by a medical emergency. After reports of the accident began to reach emergency dispatchers, members of the Miami-Dade Police Department as well as members of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue service rushed to the scene and began to offer their emergency services. What we currently know comes from reports issued by these two agencies.
The building to which the pool is attached is home to a small family that includes a 2-year-old and an 11-year-old. Videos released along with the footage of the crash show the members of this family often playing in and around the pool where the incident took place. In fact, two hours before the incident itself occurred several members of a pool maintenance company were working around the pool. That none of them happened to be outside at the time of the accident is an extremely fortunate circumstance and is likely due to the fact that, on that particular day, it was raining outside.
The exact time of the incident is not entirely clear, but it was sometime during the day when the SUV was driving down the road adjacent to the home. It was while passing the home that the driver suffered from a medical emergency believed by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials to be diabetic shock. As a result, the driver lost control of their vehicle.
The SUV departed from the roadway and began racing across the home’s front lawn. From there, it crashed through the fence surrounding the home’s back patio and pool. Video captured by a “smart” doorbell shows the car bursting through the fence, dipping into the pool, and then crashing out of the fence on the patio’s far side. Water from the pool, now dirty from its brush with the undercarriage of the car, pours across the tile patio. Beside the smashed fence, a child’s tricycle remains upright, as though nothing had happened.
While none of the family or the maintenance crew were injured in the crash, it is believed that the driver of the SUV is recovering from injuries they sustained. The extent of these injuries is not clear.
The homeowner and several neighbors are appealing to local politicians to have a barrier wall erected in the neighborhood in order to keep speeding cars from tearing through people’s yards. Apparently, this is only the most recent of just such incidents.
