Melbourne Power Pole Breaks in Single Car Crash
A busy Melbourne road was closed as of early on Monday morning after a collision resulted in an investigation as well as a lengthy cleanup time. Reports from members of the Melbourne Police Department indicated that the car accident took place along Sarno Road, close to the intersection of Sarno and North Apollo Boulevard. Sarno Road, while not a highway, does possess two lanes going in each direction. This makes it a major artery for people traveling to work during the morning, which is exactly when the incident took place.
Sometime before 6:15 in the morning, a red Mazda carrying two individuals was headed down Sarno when something happened to cause the driver of the car to lose control. It is not clear if this loss of control was due to distracted driving or if inclement weather or some unexpected road condition caused the driver to lose control, but what we do know is that the driver of the Mazda was not able to regain control of the car as it spun wildly across the road.
The Mazda then departed from the roadway and careened along the shoulder. The car ultimately came to a final stop only after it collided with a power pole, resulting in the pole snapping. The transformer attached to the pole dangled dangerously over the roadway, held aloft only by several electrical wires.
It is believed that emergency response crews rushed to the area to aid the individuals within the car as well as to ensure that the downed lines didn’t cause even more damage. Even though the crews acted quickly, a tractor-trailer traveling through the area still managed to become tangled within the wires. It is believed that this large vehicle was removed without incident and that the driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries.
The reports indicated that the driver and passenger within the Mazda also managed to escape from the accident without much bodily injury. It is not clear if either of them were treated for minor wounds.
Regarding the lane closures, the Melbourne Police Department told motorists at around 6:30 that they should expect the entirety of all four lanes of Sarno Road, from Apollo Boulevard to U.S. 1, to remain closed for several hours.
