Man Killed in Crash on I-95 Near Ormond Beach
In an unfortunate incident on Interstate 95 near Ormond Beach, a man was killed in a tragic car accident. The crash, which took place in the afternoon on Thursday, January 28th, 2016, occurred roughly halfway between the State Road 40 and U.S. 1 overpasses, appears to have occurred when the man’s vehicle left the highway for unknown reasons.
Around 2:10 p.m. that afternoon, the 2013 Ford Explorer was heading southbound in the outside lane when it veered off the highway and crashed into the treeline near the shoulder of the road. According to Florida State Troopers, the Explorer spun out in a counter-clockwise direction, eventually coming to rest with its front end facing East. Fortunately, no additional vehicles were involved in what would turn out to be a fatal accident.
The sole victim of the crash, an as-of-yet unnamed 58-year old man from Winter Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol is still pending, and there has not yet been any information released as to whether authorities suspect the involvement of alcohol, substance abuse, distracted driving, or perhaps a medical emergency. Additional information about the driver’s identity will not be released by police until his immediate next-of-kin have been properly notified.
