Lakewood Ranch Man Killed in Rear End Collision
A 47 year old Lakewood Ranch, Florida man has died following a three car accident that happened in Manatee County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was traveling westbound in his Honda CR-V on State Road 70 near the intersection with Braden Run. Behind him was a Nissan Frontier pickup truck being driven by a 53 year old male from Myakka City. Allegedly, the Nissan pickup truck rear ended the Honda, forcing him across the median and into the path of an oncoming Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by a 63 year old Lakewood Ranch man.
Whereas the driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, the driver of the Nissan was transported to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Ford F-350 was also taken to the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Although the accident remains under investigation and all charges are pending at this point, the Florida Highway Patrol has reported that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Rear end collisions are the most common type of car accident. According to one estimate, they are the cause of nearly 2.5 million accidents every year. Typically they are caused by inattentiveness on the part of the rear-ending driver. More often than not, rear end accidents are not fatal, as many happen in slow moving traffic or parking lots. One recent report says that they result in approximately six deaths per one million registered cars. However, when they happen at high rates of speed, like on a highway in the case at hand, they become particularly dangerous. This is because a) the drive in front does not see it coming and thus cannot properly react in time and b) they create a bumper car effect, essentially sending the car in front forward or forward and to the side.
