Lake County Teenager Killed in Clermont Collision with Box Truck

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 23, 2020

On September 22nd, 2020, three young teenagers were seriously injured and one was killed after they were involved in an early-morning car accident in Lake County. According to preliminary collision reports from the Clermont Police Department, the fatal collision happened along the southbound lanes of U.S. 27 at Hooks Street after their vehicle crashed into the undercarriage of a large box truck.

It was close to 2:30 in the morning this past Tuesday that an officer with the Clermont Police Department was handling routine police business near the area of U.S. 27 and Hooks Street, when he suddenly overheard what he believed to be a collision and quickly relayed the information to dispatchers. “This call was actually generated by an officer who was conducting a business check in that vicinity and heard what sounded like a collision, went to investigate and they were actually the first individuals on scene,” remarked Sgt. Malcolm Draper in a statement from the Clermont Police Department.

Upon their arrival at the crash site, authorities with the CPD discovered four young individuals suffering from a range of serious injuries inside a badly damaged Toyota Corolla that had become wedged underneath a Penske box truck during the collision. As precious minutes ticked away, rescuers and emergency response teams worked feverishly to free the teens from the mangled vehicle. Once they were able to gain entry into the Corolla, the driver and two passengers were immediately transported by ambulance to Arnold Palmer Hospital and Orlando Regional Medical Center with extensive life-threatening injuries. Sadly, due to the severe nature of his injuries, the fourth person in the vehicle was unable to survive and he passed away at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the box truck were uninjured in the accident and were in full cooperation with the Clermont Police Department. No criminal charges are expected to be filed.

After further investigations by the CPT, they have determined that the juvenile occupants of the Toyota were all well-under the legal age limit for driving in Florida, and had taken the keys to the car from an unknowing relative.
