Lake County Dump Truck Accident Kills Two Center Hill Residents
According to early collision reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, two residents of Center Hill were killed on February 9th, 2021, after their vehicle was involved in a deadly T-bone accident along County Road 33 near Austin Merritt Road in Lake County, just south of the Florida Turnpike.
It was shortly before 10 a.m. this past Tuesday morning when local Lake County authorities were dispatched to the scene of a potentially fatal side-impact collision involving a sedan and a dump truck on C.R. 33 close to Austin Merritt Road. Reports from first responders indicate that a 69-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man were traveling eastbound in their sedan along Austin Merritt Road when the driver attempted to make a left turn onto northbound C.R. 33. This decision put the Center Hill residents in the direct path of an oncoming dump truck which was unable to stop his vehicle before crashing into the right passenger’s side of the sedan. The force from the accident was so intense that it caused the dump truck to tip over onto the shoulder of the road.
Although Lake County emergency response teams were able to reach the accident site within minutes of the initial 9-1-1 call, the 69-year-old woman and 70-year-old man had sustained severe injuries during the crash which proved to be too serious for them to survive, and they passed away at the scene. The 30-year-old driver of the dump truck sustained only minor injuries in the collision.
It is unclear at this time if the sedan’s driver was aware of the dump truck and thought perhaps they’d be able to make the turn in time, or if something along the roadway caused the driver’s vision to become obscured, or maybe the driver simply did not see the other vehicle. These details will certainly be discovered as the investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol progresses.
