Jacksonville Accident Results in Death of Resident
An afternoon accident at the intersection of Normandy Boulevard and Blair Road in Jacksonville has left one man dead. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that a 59-year-old man from Jacksonville was stopped for a red light in a 2002 Toyota Echo when he was rear-ended by a 2002 Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the Cherokee was traveling east on Normandy and did not slow down as he approached vehicles that were stopped at the intersection. The Cherokee slammed into the Toyota at a high rate of speed and the driver of the Toyota was killed at the scene. The driver of the Cherokee was taken UF Health Jacksonville for his injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol indicates that the accident is still under investigation at this time and they have not said whether speed or alcohol was a factor in this accident. What is clear is that the driver of the Toyota was stopped for the traffic light and had no way to avoid being hit by the driver of the Cherokee. Unfortunately for this victim, he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There are many precautions drivers can take to keep themselves safe on the road. The Florida Highway Patrol advises that drivers stay alert to their surroundings, avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating or drinking while driving, and ensure that they are not too fatigued before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Driving well-maintained vehicles equipped with functioning seat belts and air bags is also recommended. However, even these measures cannot keep everyone safe from the danger posed by other drivers.
According to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, there are almost 13 million registered drivers in the state of Florida. Most of these drivers behave responsible behind the wheel and follow traffic laws and regulations. However, even cautious drivers can sometimes become distracted by outside influences while driving. A distraction that takes a driver’s attention away from the task at hand, even if it is just a few seconds, can have deadly consequences especially if the vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed. Though these drivers may not have intended to harm or kill, their actions affect the lives of their victims and the families of the victims forever.
