Hit-and-Run Crash Severely Injures Semi-Truck Driver from Summerfield
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Tampa are currently searching for two individuals who fled the scene of a severe multi-vehicle collision last night on Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County.
According to preliminary reports surrounding the severe auto accident, it was close to 9 p.m. on December 28, 2022, when a yet-to-be identified driver and their passenger were travelling in the southbound direction of I-275 in a sedan-style vehicle. As the driver approached the vicinity of Waters Avenue, they attempted to merge into the inside lane and struck the passenger’s side of a tractor-trailer that was nearby.
The impact from the initial T-bone collision caused the semi-truck to rollover over and catch fire, while the sedan slammed into a safety guardrail and overturned as well. Moments later, a van carrying six people, three of which were young children, entered the area and crashed into the undercarriage of the semi-truck. Once the dust & debris had settled from all three accidents, the driver and the passenger from the sedan exited their damaged vehicle and fled the crash site on foot.
Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol and several emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene of the auto accident and found the 51-year-old semi-truck driver from Summerfield in serious condition. He was transported to a Tampa hospital for further medical treatment. The six occupants of the van were unharmed.
If you have any information regarding the identity of either the driver or the passenger of the sedan whom authorities believe caused this serious collision, please contact your local police department, the state’s official Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477), or the Florida Highway Patrol by dialing *347 on a mobile device.
