High-Speed Car Crash on U.S. 1 Kills Driver in Monroe County
Authorities with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating a fatal auto accident that occurred during the Tuesday morning commute along U.S. 1 and resulted in the death of a Key Largo woman. Officials in the area were forced to close Coral Shores High School, Key Largo School, and Plantation Key School due to the traffic congestion and destruction the vehicle caused on its high-speed collision course.
It was approximately 5:30 a.m. on February 23rd, 2021, when officers with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the deadly accident along the southbound lanes of U.S.1 near mile marker 98 in Key Largo. According to a statement from Sheriff Rick Ramsay to U.S. 1 Radio, the vehicle involved in this collision had reached speeds of over 100 MPH before crashing into multiple roadside hazards and debris, including a stack of telephone wiring cables, large slabs of concrete, palm trees, pieces of fence, and utility poles. Sheriff Ramsay also indicated that the vehicle rolled over several times and that the force of impact from the crash “was so severe that the vehicle was torn into three separate pieces,” he said.
Although details surrounding the Key Largo woman who was driving the vehicle have yet to be released, presumably pending notification of next of kin, it was disclosed that she did not survive the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently working in conjunction with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to determine the events leading up to the fatal collision.
Since U.S. 1 is the only main road throughout the Florida Keys, the flow of cars in the area was immediately impacted as a result of the crash and caused a 5-mile congestion that took hours to smooth out. At one point, vehicles were being diverted off the road and over to nearby golf cart paths in order to ease the traffic jam along the highway.
