High-Speed Car Crash Claims the Lives of Two Men in Polk County
Officers with the traffic homicide division of the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Polk County have opened an official investigation into the deaths of two men who suffered fatal injuries after they were involved in a high-speed collision with another motorist Monday evening along State Road 400.
According to preliminary accident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, it was shortly before 9:30 p.m. on September 23, 2021, when an unidentified driver and a 30-year man from Kissimmee were traveling in a sedan at a high rate of speed down the eastbound lanes of S.R. 400 close to C.R. 557 in Polk County. For reasons that are currently unknown, the driver of the passenger vehicle lost control of his car, careened across the highway’s median, crashed through a construction zone, and finally came to a complete stop after colliding with a 31-year-old Cape Coral man’s van that was coming from the opposite direction.
Polk County emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene of the deadly collision and upon their arrival, they discovered that the driver of the sedan had been fully ejected from the vehicle during the collision and his 30-year-old passenger was partially ejected from the sedan. Although EMTs employed lifesaving techniques to the men, their injuries proved to be far too severe for them to survive and they both passed away. Neither of the deceased victims was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The 31-year-old driver of the van suffered minor injuries during the accident, however, his 37-year-old passenger, also from Cape Coral, sustained critical injuries. It is presumed that these survivors were transported to a local hospital, although those details were not disclosed to the public.
