Head-On Collision Leaves One Dead in Osceola County
A 29-year-old Orlando man was killed in a head-on collision last weekend. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident happened when the driver was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes on State Road 60 near Peavine Road in south Osceola County. There was a 43-year-old male passenger in his car.
At around 3:45 am on early Saturday morning, his 2016 Dodge collided head-on with an oncoming tractor trailer. The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the tractor trailer, a 31-year-old male from Winter Haven, Florida, suffered from minor injuries.
A head-on collision is a car accident that occurs when the front end of a vehicle, whether it be a car, truck, bus or motorcycle, collides with the front end of another motor vehicle. As made clear by this accident, head-on collisions generally result in serious injuries. In fact, head-on collisions are responsible for a higher rate of fatalities than all other types of crashes, with the exception of rollover accidents. The reason for this high fatality rate is that, by their nature, head-on collisions result in a sudden stopping of a vehicle’s forward momentum. This creates an effect similar to crashing into a brick wall. When the cars hit, there is no absorption of the impact force, thus throwing the occupants forward.
Like in this Orlando accident, one of the most common causes of a head-on collision is when a driver drives the wrong way on the road – particularly when doing so on a two lane, undivided road. Other common causes of head-on collisions include:
- Crossing the centerline
- Incorrectly passing another vehicle on a two-lane road
- Falling asleep while driving
- Speeding and, in particular, speeding around a curve
- Failure to obey road signs
- Driving under the influence
- Driving while distracted
