Flagler County Interstate Crash Kills Elderly Couple

On the evening of Tuesday, January 26th, 2016, an elderly couple was killed when their vehicle veered into the path of a semi-truck on Interstate 95 in Florida’s Flagler County.

Originally from Brooklyn, NY, 85-year-old Luigi Camporeale and 76-year-old Filomena Camporeale were driving through along the coast of northern Florida on I-95 and had temporarily pulled off onto the highway’s shoulder at Palm Coast Parkway. When they attempted to re-enter the highway, their Ford Escape pulled into the path of a semi-truck. The truck was unable to avoid a collision, hitting the Camporeale’s Escape and slamming it into the interstate’s guardrail.

Although all three individuals involved in the wreck were wearing their seat belts, due to the severity of the impact and the nature of the vehicles involved, the crash was unfortunately fatal. The Camporeales were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, 50-year-old Elias Saavedra from Louisville, KY, escaped the accident unhurt.

Though it seems likely that the Camporeales simply did not check traffic before re-entering the highway, Florida Highway Patrol authorities have not revealed whether the incident showed any evidence of additional causes, such as alcohol, distracted driving, or perhaps medical issues related to old age. So far, the semi-truck driver has not been implicated as having been at fault in any way.
