Flagler County Crash Leaves Five Dead, Three Injured
Last weekend a Flagler County, Florida car crash left five dead and three injured. It all started when a 2008 Mazda Tribute was T-boned while attempting to make a left turn from Old Dixie Highway onto US Highway 1. According to a report filed by the Florida Highway Patrol, as the 58 old male driver from Miramar, Florida, made his left turn, his vehicle ventured into the path of an oncoming 2000 Ford F-250 traveling northbound on US 1. The truck slammed into the driver’s side of the Mazda, causing the car to barrel into a 2016 Toyota Camry stopped in the southbound turning lane of US 1.
The driver of the Mazda died on the scene, as did his four passengers: a 74 year old female from Miami, a 70 year old female from Miramar, a 52 year old female from Pembroke Pines and a 64 year old female also from Pembroke Pines. Furthermore, the 34 year old male driver of the Ford pickup truck suffered minor injuries, as did his two passengers, a 22 year old and four year old female, both from Bunnell, Florida. All three were taken to Florida Hospital Flagler for treatment. The 72 year old male driver of the Camry, from Ormond Beach, also went to the hospital with what is listed as minor injuries.
The wreck is one of the county’s deadliest on record and happened at an intersection that officials have already deemed unsafe and on a road that the Florida Department of Transportation has listed as among the county’s most dangerous. Speaking at a Flagler County Commission meeting that happened shortly after the accident, one citizen noted that the yield signs located on Old Dixie Highway are particularly hard to see. As a result, local officials have formally made a request with the Florida Department of Transportation to add a stop light at the intersection.
