Fatal Head-On Crash Between Pickup and SUV in Volusia County
A head-on collision within Volusia County resulted in the death of a single individual and the injury of numerous others. At the time of this writing, reports from the Florida Highway Patrol give us the clearest picture of what took place to cause such a devastating collision. Their reports are, however, preliminary documents. Further updates to the story are expected as an investigation into the incident continues.
It was on the afternoon of Saturday, September 19th, that an SUV was traveling down the western lanes of State Road 40. At the same time, a pickup truck was driving down the eastern lanes of the same road. The two vehicles, traveling in opposite directions, neared one another at just about 2:20 in the afternoon. The area where the two were slated to pass one another was one where the road curved sharply. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue and both the pickup and the SUV would have passed one another without incident, but something happened within the cab of the SUV while the driver was navigating the curve and they lost control of the vehicle.
The SUV traveled from the western lanes into the eastern lanes at the same time as the pickup truck was navigating the curve. Neither driver had the time or foresight to be able to avoid the other, and the two vehicles crashed into each other head-on. Both were still traveling at a significant rate of speed when the crash took place.
Head-on collisions are notorious for their violence and devastation, and this one was no different. As a result of the injuries they sustained in the crash, the driver of the pickup truck was declared dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the SUV, while they survived the initial crash, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The condition of this person remains unknown at the time of this writing.
Within the pickup and the SUV were several passengers, and these people were also treated for injuries as a result of the crash. It is not known if any of them were able to be easily treated at the scene or if all required hospitalization.
While the preliminary investigation and response took place, both the eastern and western lanes of State Road 40 were shut down throughout the area.
