Fatal Head-On Crash Between Car and Rock Truck in Sumter County
On the early morning of Thursday, February 27th, members of the Florida Highway Patrol were called to an auto accident that had taken place along U.S. Highway 301, close to this road’s intersection with County Road 523 in Sumter County. The reports at the time of this writing are still somewhat impoverished regarding the amount of information they possess, but it is believed that an investigation remains ongoing into the incident. At the time of this writing, we do know that an individual died as a result of the crash. It is not clear if anyone else was injured.
It was close to 3:15 in the morning when a 29-year-old man from Ocala was driving along U.S. Highway 301. He was behind the wheel of a Hyundai Sonata, coming from an unknown location, and traveling down an unspecified lane of the highway. At this same time, a truck being used to haul rocks was traveling down the opposite lanes of this highway. It is not clear if the rock truck was traveling to or from a construction zone.
At the time when the two vehicles were about to pass one another, something happened within the cab of the Hyundai to cause the vehicle to swerve out of its travel lane and into the one heading in the other direction. Unfortunately, the rock truck was inside of these other lanes, traveling at a rate of speed that made the driver unable to avoid the sudden onrush of the Hyundai. The two vehicles collided head-on, a crash that carried with it a considerable amount of force.
The driver of the Hyundai was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and it is believed that this factor, combined with the overwhelming force of the collision, caused the individual to sustain fatal injuries. When paramedics and EMTs reached the area, there was nothing that they were able to do for the badly wounded young man and they were declared dead at the scene of the crash.
It is not believed that the Hyundai had any other passengers within the vehicle. The driver of the rock truck was reportedly uninjured in the event.
Finally, preliminary reports suggest that the incident was not the result of intoxication.
