Fatal & Fiery Three-Car Crash in Brevard County
Flames and twisted metal accompanied a fatality within Brevard County after numerous vehicles collided in a devastating auto accident that took place along Interstate 95 towards the middle of May. It was sometime before 10:00 at night on Sunday, May 17th, when a 40-year-old individual from Rockledge was behind the wheel of an SUV and traveling down I-95. At the same time, it is believed that a van and a sedan were also traveling down I-95 in the same direction as the SUV.
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol were among the first responders to the incident, and much that we currently know about the crash comes from their reports. According to these reports, it was as the SUV neared mile marker 192 that they approached the rear of the van traveling in the same lane. For reasons that are not currently clear, the driver of the SUV did not appropriately slow their vehicle as they neared the rear of the van, a circumstance which resulted in the front of the SUV striking the rear of the van with a considerable amount of force. The driver of the van then lost control of the vehicle which shot off of the road and overturned.
Meanwhile, the SUV remained within its travel lane where it was struck in the rear-end by the sedan, whose driver was unable to stop after the initial accident between the van and the SUV took place. When the SUV finally came to a stop, the damage it had suffered was catastrophic. Soon, smoke was seen pouring from the vehicle, quickly followed by flames.
The driver of the SUV was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and it is believed that this, combined with the impacts with the van and the sedan, caused them to suffer the injuries that ultimately proved to be fatal.
The 19-year-old driver of the Sedan, a person from Cocoa, was not injured in the incident, and neither was the 29-year-old person from Port Orange behind the wheel of the van.
The incident remains under investigation as the authorities seek to discover just why the driver of the SUV collided with the rear of the van.
