Edgewater Man Dies in Merritt Island Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 10, 2020

Early in April, a single-car crash took place on Merritt Island that resulted in an in-depth and ongoing investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. We know so far that the incident took place sometime before 7:30 in the morning on Wednesday, April 1st. The exact time of the crash remains an object of some speculation. Authorities were only notified after an employee with the Kennedy Space Center saw the crashed car along the side of the road, close to the intersection of Courtenay Parkway and Bio Lab Road. It is not clear if the Kennedy Space Center employee was also in their car or if they happened to catch sight of the flipped vehicle while on foot somewhere nearby.

After they saw the flipped vehicle, the Kennedy Space Center employee notified emergency services. Ambulances and members of the Florida Highway Patrol then rushed to the area to see whether or not anyone remained at the crash site and, if so, whether or not they were in need of emergency medical assistance. When they arrived, they found the scene much as described by the employee. The overturned car was there, and evidence suggested that the crash had only recently taken place.

The car itself was empty, however a quick search of the surrounding area located the driver. It is not clear if the driver was alive when the emergency medical teams reached them, but we do know that they were ultimately declared dead at the scene of the crash. Based on the evidence taken from the site, the Florida Highway Patrol has stated that it appears extremely likely that the car began to overturn shortly after the driver lost control. Apparently, the driver was also not wearing a seatbelt at this time, and as the car rolled over they were thrown from the vehicle. It is believed that they sustained their fatal injuries sometime during this process.

Following the initial investigation, the driver was identified as a 53-year-old Edgewater resident. It is believed that they were alone in the car at the time of the crash.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing as Florida Highway Patrol officials work to discover just what happened to cause the driver of the car to lose control and suffer this fatal accident.
