Crash at Clearwater Daycare Injures Three Adults and Three Children
According to preliminary collision reports from the Clearwater Police Department, several people were injured early yesterday evening after a truck crashed into a daycare center located near the intersection of Lakeview Road and South Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
Statements retrieved from witnesses at the scene of the accident indicate that it was close to 5:30 p.m. on June 13, 2022, when a 57-year-old grandmother arrived at Building Blocks at Clearwater. As she pulled her truck into the school’s pickup line, she told officers that she thought a child had run out “in front of or near” her vehicle so she pressed what she believed to be the brake pedal in order to stop a collision. Unfortunately, the grandmother instead stepped on the accelerator and her truck careened out of control through the parking lot and struck several pedestrians, including a mother and her three young children, ages 2, 3, and 5, as well as a member of the daycare’s staff, before crashing into the building itself.
Emergency response teams in Clearwater transported the mother to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, while her three children were taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. The daycare teacher and driver of the pickup truck were also transported to local hospitals. It is reported that everyone involved in the accident only sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
“All of the injuries are not life-threatening. That’s where we’re extremely fortunate here. This could have been a true disaster of a lot more serious proportions. We’re thankful that the children didn’t suffer great injuries or the adults,” said Clearwater Police Department Public Information Officer Rob Shaw, in a statement to local media outlets.
The 57-year-old grandmother was issued a citation for careless driving.
