Citrus County DUI Crash Kills 33-Year-Old Woman from Ocala
According to records from the arresting officers with the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Citrus County, a 38-year-old Hernando man has been taken into custody for his alleged connection to a deadly DUI accident that claimed the life of a 33-year-old woman at the end of January.
Preliminary crash reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was close to 6 p.m. on January 25, 2022, when 38-year-old Hernando resident David Michael Kahler was driving his pickup in the southern direction of North Carl G. Rose Highway. As he approached the street’s intersection with Lecanto Highway, his truck unexpectedly entered the northbound lane of traffic and almost collided with an oncoming sedan being driven by a 33-year-old female. This near-miss accident caused the driver of the sedan to veer off the roadway and into a nearby mailbox. Meanwhile, the Hernando man attempted to avoid the accident by swerving his vehicle back into the southbound lane. After performing this dangerous maneuver, his pickup became positioned in the direct path of an SUV in the southbound lane of the highway. The driver of the sport utility vehicle was unable to avoid a collision with the truck and it slammed into the right-hand side of the pickup.
Local emergency response teams in Citrus County arrived at the scene of the multi-vehicle pileup and quickly determined that the 33-year-old driver of the sedan had sustained fatal injuries during the collision and had already passed away. The 28-year-old Ocala woman who was driving the SUV suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment. Her 3-year-old passenger was thankfully unharmed during the accident. Members of the Florida Highway Patrol apprehended David Michael Kahler on the spot and he now faces multiple charges, including possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI property damage, DUI serious injury, and DUI manslaughter.
