Chain-Reaction Collision Caused by High-Speed Crash Near Tampa
The southbound lanes of Interstate 75 were closed for several hours Tuesday morning after an accident between a pickup truck and a motorcycle caused a chain-reaction collision involving multiple motorists.
According to preliminary auto accident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, it was close to 12:30 p.m. on March 7, 2023, when a 23-year-old man from Tampa was purportedly driving a 2014 Kawasaki-brand motorcycle at a high rate of speed in the southern direction of I-75 in Hillsborough County. As the motorcyclist reached the vicinity of mile marker 275, he crashed into a trailer full of car parts that was being pulled behind a 2012 Ford F250.
“Upon impact, the motorcyclist was ejected into the open trailer, as debris from the collision spread across all southbound lanes of the interstate,” said Florida Highway Patrol troopers in a statement to local media outlets.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the accident and medical teams quickly transported the 23-year-old motorcyclist by air to the nearest hospital. He was unable to survive the severity of his injuries and passed away shortly after arriving at the facility.
A second crash involving five additional vehicles occurred as a result of the pickup truck’s debris spilling out onto the roadway, but no injuries have been reported at this time. The driver of the Ford F250 from the first collision, a 53-year-old man from Apollo Beach, was also unharmed.
This section of I-75 was reopened to traffic shortly before the morning commute had started.
Further information is expected to be released once the Florida Highway Patrol has concluded an official investigation.
