Car Crashes into Rear of Semi at Lake County Tollbooth, One Killed

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on July 10, 2020

Officers and other emergency response officials are at work within Lake County to investigate a fatal rear-end collision that took place on Wednesday, July 8th, at a tollbooth located along the Florida Turnpike. At the time of this writing, the most up to date reports we’ve received come from both news agencies within Central Florida as well as from posts made via the social media accounts for the Florida Highway Patrol working within Lake County.

It was close to 11:00 in the morning and a semi-truck was momentarily paused at the tollbooth along the Florida Highway Patrol close to mile marker 288. The driver of the truck was speaking to the tollbooth attendant. Before the driver of the truck could finish the transaction with the attendant, a second vehicle entered the scene.

The second vehicle was not described in the report, but we do know that it was traveling down the southern lanes when it neared the tollbooth. We also know that the driver of this vehicle was either unaware of the truck or believed themselves to be somehow able to pass or avoid the rear of the truck as they approached. Regardless of what was happening within the driver’s mind, the second vehicle collided with the rear of the semi-truck with a considerable amount of force, inflicting severe damage on the vehicle and causing at least one person to sustain severe injuries.

Emergency response crews were called to the scene and immediately rushed to the area in order to provide emergency aid to those involved. While it is not known how many people were injured in the incident, we do know that at least one person within the second vehicle was badly hurt in the accident. Despite the best efforts of the paramedics and EMTs who arrived at the location, this individual was declared dead at the scene.

Regarding the investigation that remains ongoing, what we know at this time is that the Florida Highway Patrol has yet to indicate whether or not any of the people involved in the crash will face any charges as a result of the fatal incident.
