Bass Player from Band ‘Clark Hill’ Killed In State Road 100 Crash
An unexpected car accident in Putnam County took the life of a well-known and well-loved musician on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016. The deceased, 38-year-old Bennie Clifton of San Mateo, FL, was the bass player for the band “Clark Hill.”
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, Clifton was driving west on State Road 1100 in a Chevy Lumina around 8 a.m. when he was hit head-on by an eastbound Nissan Altima that had inexplicably crossed the center line around East End Road. Although he was wearing a seat belt, the force of the impact was fatal to Clifton.
The Altima’s driver, 22-year-old Jasmine Varnes from Palatka, FL, was also wearing her seat belt, and survived the accident with serious injuries. She was then taken by helicopter to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL for treatment and recovery.
Clifton’s bandmates were stunned by his sudden death, and mourned his loss publicly via the band’s official Facebook page. “With a heavy heart I have to make this post,” read a public Facebook post. “Today we lost the best friend, best man, best bass player in the world in a tragic car accident.”
While the Florida Highway Patrol completes its investigation of the fatal accident, charges have not yet been brought against Varnes.
