Ambulance Transporting Patient Struck by SUV in Ocala

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 6, 2020

An ambulance traveling through Marion County was involved in an accident while transporting the victim of another crash to a nearby hospital towards the end of July. According to the reports currently available, the incident took place on Monday, July 27th, after emergency response crews had rushed to the site of a car accident sometime before 5:00 in the evening. At this first accident, at least one person had suffered injuries serious enough to require hospitalization. Paramedics then loaded this individual into the ambulance and then began to transport them to a hospital in the area.

It was while the ambulance was traveling down North U.S. Highway 441 that it reached the intersection of this major roadway and Northwest 35th Street within the City of Ocala. It is believed that the ambulance had its lights and siren activated at the time and that almost all motorists on the road had pulled over in order to allow the ambulance to pass safely.

One driver, however, who was behind the wheel of an SUV either failed to take note of the ambulance or simply believed that they weren’t affected by the sirens and lights. It is believed that this driver was approaching the intersection of North U.S. Highway 441 and Northwest 35th Street at the same time as the ambulance and that both vehicles then attempted to pass through the busy intersection at the same time.

As a result, the SUV collided with the ambulance while traveling at a fairly advanced rate of speed.

The force of the crash was severe enough to cause all three of the paramedics within the vehicle to require treatment at a nearby hospital. While all of their injuries were minor, the incident represents a major risk undertaken by emergency response crews when citizens fail to take appropriate note of their presence.

The patient within the ambulance was transferred to another ambulance and taken to the hospital as planned. It is not clear if they sustained additional injuries as a result of the crash.

Charges are pending against the driver of the SUV. It is not clear if they sustained any injuries in the incident.
