Adult and Child Hospitalized After Car Flips in Sumter County Crash
A two-car crash that took place within Sumter County on Saturday, November 30th, resulted in the hospitalization of at least two individuals. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol provide us with the majority of the information around the crash, and they state that both of the vehicles were traveling down the northern lanes of Interstate 75 in Sumter County when they approached a vehicle that is believed to be owned and operated by the Florida Highway Patrol itself.
For reasons that are not currently clear, the driver of this FHP vehicle suddenly slowed the car. It is not clear if the vehicle behind the FHP car was traveling too close or if the the FHP car slowed too abruptly, but the driver behind the FHP car was not able to stop in time to avoid striking the FHP car’s rear and subsequently swerved to avoid a collision. In the process of this swerving, the driver of the car lost control. The car began to rotate on the road, and before the driver could regain control, they struck the left side of the second car involved in the accident.
After this collision, the car which had swerved began to overturn, flipping numerous times before finally coming to rest on its head. Pictures from the scene show this car in the middle of the highway, its windows shattered and its front end badly mangled. The driver of the second car involved in the crash was able to pull their vehicle over to the side of the road. It is not clear if this driver lost control of their vehicle in any way.
Paramedics and EMTs were called to the scene, and they rushed to tend to the injured individuals. It is believed that only two people were injured in the crash: one adult and one child. It is not clear if both of these people were inside of the car that flipped or if one of them was in the second vehicle which pulled off to the side of the road. The adult was transported from the scene of the crash to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The child suffered from minor injuries but was also transported to a hospital for treatment.
The incident remains under investigation.
