60-Year-Old Driver Killed During Wrong-Way Collision Near DeLand
Local Volusia County officials and Florida Highway Patrol troopers are currently investigating a wrong-way crash that claimed the life of one person and seriously injured another Sunday evening on Spring Garden Avenue, just north of DeLand.
Although several details surrounding this fatal auto accident have yet to be determined, authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol have stated that it was approximately 9:07 p.m. on June 4, 2023, when a 60-year-old man from Barberville was behind the wheel of a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria driving in the northern direction of the southbound lanes of Spring Garden Avenue. As he approached the upcoming intersection with Glenwood Road, the Ford Crown Victoria was involved in a head-on collision with a 42-year-old woman from DeLand who was driving a 2019 Nissan Rogue.
Moments after the first crash occurred, a 23-year-old man from Deltona driving a 2015 Nissan Altima entered the area. His car was struck by pieces of debris from the other two vehicles that had been scattered across the roadway. He did not sustain any injuries from this secondary incident.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol and Volusia County first responders were dispatched to the intersection of Glenwood Road and Spring Garden Avenue and immediately transported the critically-injured 42-year-old DeLand woman to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
The 60-year-old driver of the Ford Crown Victoria sustained fatal injuries during the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports indicate that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
