58-Year-Old Injured After Following GPS Directions into Construction Site
Officials within Orange County have released a report concerning an auto accident that happened within Orlando on Wednesday, May 29th, and resulted in a 58-year-old needing to be airlifted to a nearby hospital as well as receiving a ticket for careless driving. The reports from the scene of the incident suggest that the accident only involved one car and that there was only one individual within this car at the time of the crash.
It was some time during Wednesday morning that the 58-year-old mentioned above was driving their car along Consulate Drive, close to State Road 528 and the Florida Turnpike. It is not known where this individual was headed, but the reports made it clear that at the time they were using their GPS for navigation purposes. As is sadly common in many cases, it appears that the individual was not watching the road as closely as they should have, relying instead on their GPS to direct them every step of the way.
Because of this, they did not hesitate when the GPS had them turn off of the road and enter a construction site located at 2501 Consulate Drive. From there, and still following the GPS, the driver drove the car directly into a 12 foot deep trench that was surrounded by live wires. As might be expected, the force of the impact caused the driver to suffer from some injuries, although none of them were life-threatening.
It is not clear if there were workers at the site when the car crashed, but someone saw the events and called 9-1-1 to report the crash. Paramedics and EMTs reached the area shortly afterwards and, carefully working around the live wires, managed to pull the 58-year-old man from the crashed vehicle and fly him to Orlando Regional Medical Center, which was located near the crash site.
As mentioned above, after the driver of the car was brought to a stable condition at the hospital he was given a ticket for careless driving. It is not known if any other charges are currently pending in the case or if the single charge will be the only one handed to the individual.
