Massive Traffic Delays After Semi and Car Collide in Osceola County Toll Booth

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on October 9, 2020

Images from the scene of an accident involving a semi truck and a tollbooth along the Florida Turnpike speak of the extreme force involved when a truck hauling blocks and bags of ice crashed heavily into a concrete pillar separating toll lanes. According to current reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident happened on Monday, October 5th, at the tollbooth located along the Florida Turnpike’s southbound lanes. Located at mile marker 236, this tollbooth normally has four different lanes for each direction. As a result of the accident, three of these lanes were closed. The following traffic jam stretched 3 miles away from the tollbooth itself and resulted in hours of delays as drivers frantically searched for alternate routes to reach their own final destinations.

What exactly took place is still under investigation, however the current reports do indicate that the authorities are looking into whether or not excessive speed played a contributing role in the accident. What exactly leads the investigators to focus on the speed of the driver of the truck remains unclear, however there are numerous point of information that can be gleaned from accidents such as this one – including skid marks, radius of debris spread, and the damage to the truck itself – that can provide investigators with a clear view of just what took place.

What is clear is that as a result of whatever was happening within the cab of the truck combined with the truck’s speed, the semi struck a car that was also headed towards the tollbooth. The details around the car, its driver, and the condition of this vehicle were not included in the initial report. We do know that the individual who was operating within the tollbooth at this particular time was not injured as a result of the incident. We also know that the driver of the semi truck was badly injured and was airlifted from the scene of the crash to a hospital located nearby.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and we hope to receive updates as the authorities continue to put the pieces together regarding what exactly took place.
