Lakeland Driver Killed During a Collision with a Semi-Truck in Polk County
Members of the traffic homicide unit with the Lakeland Police Department are currently investigating the death of a 28-year-old driver who lost his life during an accident with a semi-truck along West Memorial Boulevard early Sunday morning in Polk County.
Preliminary collision reports from officers with several local law enforcement agencies indicate that it was close to 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2022, when 28-year-old Devin Robert Henkel was driving his 2018 Nissan Frontier in the eastbound direction of West Memorial Boulevard in Lakeland. At this same time, a tractor-trailer located near the 2900th block of the same street was parked on the side of the road with its hazard lights illuminated. For reasons that are unknown at this time, Henkel’s truck unexpectedly swerved into the safety lane and crashed into the rear-end of the stopped semi-truck.
Several first responders were dispatched to the scene of the auto accident, including authorities with the Lakeland Police Department Patrol Unit, the Lakeland Fire Department, and the Polk County Fire Rescue. Emergency medical teams immediately employed life-saving measures for the 28-year-old driver of the pickup truck, however, due to the severe nature of his injuries, he was unable to survive and passed away at the scene. Ross Allen Greene, the 60-year-old driver of the semi-truck and resident of Floral City, was unharmed in the collision.
The area surrounding the deadly accident was closed for approximately five hours while detectives with the Lakeland Police Department surveyed the crash site and collected evidence in order to determine the exact cause of the collision. Further details are expected to be released to the public at the conclusion of this tragic case.
