Teen Dies From Injuries Suffered in Florida Motorcycle Accident

A teenager who suffered serious injuries in a late December motorcycle accident died at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola recently. The 17-year-old victim was driving a Honda Shadow northbound on Pine Forest Road near Longleaf Drive around 10:15 p.m. on December 30 when he was struck by a car and thrown from his motorcycle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, after being struck and thrown, the victim was struck again by a Ford Taurus and pinned beneath the car.

Man Killed in Orlando Pedestrian Accident

A 67-year-old Orlando man struck by a sports utility vehicle while crossing West Colonial Drive recently died from his injuries two days after the pedestrian accident. Orlando police officers said a 2003 Ford Excursion driven by a 39-year-old Orlando woman struck the man as he crossed the eastbound lanes of Colonial Drive. The victim was rushed to a local hospital for treatment with severe head and internal injuries. Officials said this is the second fatal Orlando pedestrian accident so far in 2011.

Vacuum cleaner manufacturer Hoover has recalled more than 140,000 of its Hoover Wind Tunnel Canister Vacuums after dozens of reports of the vacuum overheating and starting fires. Hoover announced the recall at the request of the Consumer Product Safety Commission after receiving more than 70 reports from customers that the vacuum overheated while plugged into an outlet even after they turned it off. In one case, the vacuum caught fire and burned a section of carpet in the owner’s home.

Orange County Man Kills Pit Bull After Witnessing Attack on Pet

An Orange County man shot and fatally wounded one of two pit bulls he saw roaming freely in his neighborhood after seeing one of the dogs attack his cat. Orange County Animal Services officials say police responded to a call in the 6800 block of Thousand Oaks Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m. on February 5 and found the dead pit bull on the road. The owner of the cat told investigating officers that the two pit bulls had damaged his yard and fence and that he had retrieved his weapon and killed one of the dogs when he saw it in his yard with one of his cats in its mouth.

Lawmakers Eye Legislation Targeting Distracted Pedestrians

Nephew of Dalai Lama Killed in Florida Pedestrian Accident

The nephew of Buddhism’s most revered leader was killed recently when he was walking along a roadway. He was trying to raise awareness about Tibetans trying to regain their independence from China. The 45-year-old nephew of the Dalai Lama was walking along State Road A1A around 7:30 p.m. on February 14 when a sports utility vehicle struck and killed him. Florida Highway Patrol officers say a 31-year-old Palm Coast man drove the SUV, but he has not been charged in connection with the fatal pedestrian accident. This stretch of S.R. A1A is especially notorious as a bicyclist was struck and killed nearby in September 2010.

Two Riders Critically Injured in Motorcycle Accident

Two motorcyclists were critically injured after a motorcycle accident recently near Cocoa. Accident investigators say that the accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 524 and State Road 520. Florida Highway Patrol officers say one victim is a 43-year-old Merritt Island woman who went to Orlando Regional Medical Center and is in critical condition. The other victim is a 47-year-old Titusville man who is receiving treatment for undisclosed critical injuries at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Wrong-Way Driver on State Road 417 Strikes Van, Injuring Four Children, Two Adults

A driver traveling in the wrong direction on State Road 417 in Seminole County died recently when he struck a van, injuring the two adults and four children inside. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. near the intersection with State Road 434. Troopers say the report is still under investigation, and they did not yet know why the 22-year-old DeLand man was traveling northbound in the southbound lane or whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
