Two Riders Critically Injured in Motorcycle Accident
Two motorcyclists were critically injured after a motorcycle accident recently near Cocoa. Accident investigators say that the accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 524 and State Road 520. Florida Highway Patrol officers say one victim is a 43-year-old Merritt Island woman who went to Orlando Regional Medical Center and is in critical condition. The other victim is a 47-year-old Titusville man who is receiving treatment for undisclosed critical injuries at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.
Officers say that shortly before the accident occurred, the man had stopped his 2006 Honda on the south side of the roadway along the shoulder of S.R. 520 for reasons not yet known. Accident investigators say that the female victim was riding a 2006 Honda eastbound on S.R. 520 in the inside lane when the Titusville man attempted to turn left from the shoulder onto S.R. 524. The man moved directly into the path of the woman’s motorcycle, causing her to collide with the left side of the man’s motorcycle.
When we hear about motorcycle accidents, we generally assume that it is a collision between a motorcycle and a car, truck or other kind of automobile, and we’re often right. Drivers of cars who either don’t see a rider or violate his or her right-of-way, or both, cause most motorcycle accidents, and riders have little to protect them in collisions with vehicles weighing many thousands of pounds. This motorcycle accident is still under investigation, but the Titusville man could be found negligent for turning directly into the path of the other rider, causing her injuries.
