Teen Dies From Injuries Suffered in Florida Motorcycle Accident
A teenager who suffered serious injuries in a late December motorcycle accident died at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola recently. The 17-year-old victim was driving a Honda Shadow northbound on Pine Forest Road near Longleaf Drive around 10:15 p.m. on December 30 when he was struck by a car and thrown from his motorcycle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, after being struck and thrown, the victim was struck again by a Ford Taurus and pinned beneath the car.
FHP accident investigators said the victim and a passenger were riding on the motorcycle when the 22-year-old Pensacola man driving the Taurus attempted to make a U-turn while traveling southbound on Pine Forest Road. As the driver turned his Taurus into the northbound lane, he found that he could not complete the turn and backed away from the curb and into the path of the rider and his passenger. The condition of the passenger on the motorcycle is unknown.
This motorcycle accident is tragically typical in that the driver of a vehicle pulled his car directly into the path of the rider. This happens every day on Florida streets and highways. Hundreds of Floridians die and thousands more suffer injuries each year due to careless drivers. In 2009, 413 people died in Florida motorcycle accidents. This number is down sharply from the 556 who died in motorcycle accidents in 2008, but that is little solace to the friends and family members of those killed by negligent motorists.
