Florida Man Severely Injured in E-Cigarette Accident

A Naples man was severely injured this past fall when an E-cigarette he had been using for approximately three months suddenly exploded in his face. The ‘Rig Mod V.2’ E-cigarette involved in the accident was purchased from a local Naples electronic cigarette supplier. According to the victim, the electronic cigarettes burst into flames one day in October, causing him to inhale the flames and the searing hot fumes. The 21-year-old was transported to the burn unit at Kendall Regional Medical Center where he underwent extensive treatment for his injuries.

The mechanism behind electronic cigarettes involved delivery of vaporized nicotine that passed through a heated liquid. The liquid often has artificial ‘flavors’ added to it to make the nicotine vapor more palatable. E-cigarettes have been billed by manufacturers and vendors as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. However, the victim of this accident would disagree. Because he inhaled flames and hot vapors, he incurred burns on his esophagus and lungs which caused swelling almost immediately. He was placed into a medically induced coma so that he could be placed on a breathing apparatus until the swelling subsided.

He awoke from the coma only to find that much of the damage his body sustained was permanent. He now undergoes regular treatments related to difficulty breathing as a result of the scarring. He has filed a lawsuit against the companies that manufactured the cigarette and also the vendors that sold it to him. Officials believe that a problem with the lithium battery enclosed in the device may have been to blame for the accident.
