SUV Strikes and Kills 86-Year-Old in Seminole County
An elderly pedestrian was walking along Longwood Markham Road in the somewhat early hours of the morning on Monday, November 16th, when they were struck by a car that was passing through the area. The reports we have at this time come courtesy of the Florida Highway Patrol, members of whom were among the first responders to the crash after it was first reported, sometime around 6:35 a.m.
What we learn from these preliminary reports is that the pedestrian was an 86-year-old person. Shortly before the crash, they were walking along Longwood Markham Road when they reached the intersection of Longwood Markham and Bia Bonita Street. This intersection is one that features numerous pedestrian safety features, including a designated crossing area with highly visible signage.
When the 86-year-old reached the intersection, they left the sidewalk and began to cross the road while inside of the crosswalk. At this time, an SUV approached this same intersection. The driver of this SUV, a person who was not named or described, reportedly did not see the elderly pedestrian as they made their way across the road. It is not clear if the crossing signals were telling the pedestrian to cross at the time, or if perhaps the driver of the car was attempting to make a right or left turn onto the roadway where the pedestrian was walking, but what is clear is that the 86-year-old person was struck by the SUV before they were able to escape back to the sidewalk.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene following the collision with the pedestrian, and it is believed that their call to the police was the one that alerted the authorities to what had happened. When members of the Florida Highway Patrol working within Seminole County arrived at the scene, they came with paramedics and EMTs who immediately began to treat the badly injured 86-year-old. Sadly, there was nothing that the medical teams could do for the elderly person, and they were declared dead at the scene of the crash.
At the time of this writing, no official charges have been issued. It is believed that the investigation remains ongoing.
