Pedestrian Struck and Killed while Crossing Orlando Street
The Florida Highway Patrol issued a statement recently about an incident which happened on Saturday, February 9th, that resulted in the death of one pedestrian. The Florida Highway Patrol’s report stated that the fatal interaction took place close to 6:30 at night, at the intersection of Goldenrod Road and Lake Underhill Road. This area, not a heavily trafficked one, still receives its fair share of road traffic, which means that pedestrians are encouraged to remain alert as to what is going on in the roadway around them.
At the above mentioned time, a Dodge van was traveling down the northern lane of Goldenrod Road, closing in on the intersection with Lake Underhill. Just as the van reached the intersection, a pedestrian wanting to get from one side of Goldenrod Road to the other began to cross the street. The area where the pedestrian was crossing does feature a crosswalk, however reports from witnesses stated that at the time that the pedestrian chose to cross at the light for oncoming traffic was green. This means that the pedestrian was supposed to wait until the light changed in order to safely cross the road.
Unfortunately, they did not do this. Almost as soon as they stepped into the road, the Dodge van struck them. It is believed that the pedestrian stepped directly into the path of the van and that the driver of the Dodge did not have time to swerve and avoid the individual.
After the crash, the driver remained at the scene of the incident while the initial investigation was conducted. The Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene with numerous paramedics who began to immediately treat the badly injured individual. The pedestrian was taken from the area and rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment. There, despite the work of doctors and nurses, the pedestrian was pronounced dead.
At the time of this writing, the collision continues to be investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol and other authorities. It is not known if any charges are currently pending or if the police plan on filing any such charges.
