Pedestrian Killed Near Tampa After Being Struck by Three Cars
Three different drivers were involved in a collision with a pedestrian that took place close to Tampa in Hillsborough County early in January. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol stated that the individual who was struck by the vehicles, a man from Seffner, was attempting to cross State Road 574 at close to 6:30 p.m. on January 4th.
From what we can gather from the early reports, the 44-year-old pedestrian was walking in a westerly direction down a leftmost lane of State Road 574 as it neared the intersection with Taylor Road. It is not clear if the pedestrian was walking in the road the whole way, but according to the driver of a 2016 Volkswagen Golf, it was as they were about to pass the pedestrian that he tried to run across the road.
The mirror affixed to the passenger side of the Golf struck the pedestrian before the driver of the car was able to swerve out of the way. After the impact, the pedestrian fell into the street where other cars were busy traveling without thinking that an injured person might be present on the asphalt. Before any help could be given to the injured pedestrian, they were struck by a 2014 Ford F-150 and then, immediately afterwards, by a 2016 Kia Sedona.
It is believed that drivers of all the cars involved stopped their vehicles after the impact and waited for the emergency response crews to reach the scene.
First responders from throughout Hillsborough County rushed to the area in order to try and assist the badly injured pedestrian. When these vehicles arrived the pedestrian was still alive, although gravely injured. The EMTs and paramedics were able to load the man into an ambulance and rush them to Tampa General Hospital, but the injuries sustained by the pedestrian in the crash proved fatal and he was declared dead some time after arriving at the emergency medical center.
An investigation into the crash remains underway, although few results have emerged from the police. We do know that alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor for both the pedestrian and the drivers, but other than that the entire ordeal remains somewhat obscure.
