Orlando Pedestrian Suffers Fatal Injuries After Being Struck by a Motorcycle
According to preliminary collision reports from the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Orlando, this fatal pedestrian accident occurred on Monday, June 29th, 2020 after an elderly woman attempted to cross a notoriously busy intersection and walked directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
Late this past Monday evening at approximately 11 p.m., Orlando authorities started to receive reports of a motorcycle vs. pedestrian crash that had occurred at Colonial Drive near Old Cheney Highway. Accident reconstruction experts at the scene indicate that the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Colonial Drive when, for reasons unknown at this time, the pedestrian stepped out onto the road and into the highly-trafficked area. Although speeding does not appear to be a factor, the biker was unfortunately unable to stop his vehicle in time to prevent the deadly impact.
Emergency response and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site. Upon arrival, they discovered two victims – a 26-year-old male motorcycle driver and a 64-year-old female pedestrian – both of which had sustained multiple injuries of varying degrees. Extreme life-saving measures were given onsite to the pedestrian as she was in the most severe condition. Once stable enough for transport, she was then rushed to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and passed away. The young motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
This case is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
It is unclear whether or not this intersection has a designated crosswalk area illuminated with flashing lights, warning signs, or any other additional safety features. Florida is one of the highest ranked states in the country for fatal pedestrian accidents – an achievement that we are certainly not excited about.
