North Carolina Resident Killed While Crossing Orlando Street
An individual believed to be from North Carolina was pronounced dead shortly after being involved in a pedestrian accident within the city of Orlando. According to the Orlando Police Department, the individual, a 66-year-old, was reportedly visiting the city while on a business trip. The man had flown to the city and was on foot close to both the Orlando International Airport and numerous hotels and restaurants in the area.
While the incident remains under investigation, we know that the man was walking along Semoran Boulevard shortly before the incident took place. It was close to 7:30 in the morning, and the area was humming with the traffic of people traveling to work, going shopping, taking people to school, or simply running a few errands. The pedestrian was reportedly using the sidewalk while they made their way along Semoran Boulevard.
When they reached the intersection of Semoran Boulevard and TG Lee Boulevard, the 66-year-old began to cross the street. This area features a crosswalk as well as a sign that signals when it is safe for pedestrians to cross. An element of the ongoing investigation concerns whether or not the pedestrian was within the crosswalk at the time of the crash and, if so, whether or not the pedestrian signal was indicating that it was safe for the pedestrian to cross.
Regardless, it was as the 66-year-old was crossing the street that a car approached from either TG Lee Boulevard or Semoran Boulevard. The trajectory of this vehicle caused it to cross over the same area where the pedestrian was walking. The driver of the car either failed to notice the pedestrian or otherwise believed that the car had enough space to pass without coming close to the person on foot. Unfortunately, this was not the case and it was as the car crossed the crosswalk that it came into contact with the pedestrian. The force of the impact was severe, and it resulted in the pedestrian suffering from fatal injuries.
When paramedics and EMTs reached the scene, there was nothing they could do for the badly injured man. He was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
